Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between Palcoyo and Rainbow Mountain (Vinicunca)?
The main difference lies in the hiking difficulty and crowd levels. At Palcoyo, the walk takes only about 40 minutes along a mostly flat trail, whereas the hike at Vinicunca is steeper and much more demanding. Additionally, Palcoyo features three distinct colorful mountains and the Stone Forest with significantly fewer tourists.
How difficult is the hike and what level of fitness do I need?
The difficulty level is Easy to Moderate. The trail is relatively flat and covers a short distance (1.2 miles round trip), so it does not require advanced physical conditioning. It is ideal for families, seniors, or anyone looking to avoid highly strenuous high-altitude treks.
How high is Palcoyo and how will altitude sickness affect me?
The highest point of the hike reaches 16,076 ft (4,900 m.a.s.l.). It is recommended to spend at least 2 days in Cusco (or the Sacred Valley) to acclimate before taking this tour. Furthermore, the guides carry a first-aid kit and emergency oxygen tanks to assist with any issues.
What is the best time of year to visit the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain Range?
The best time to visit is during the dry season (May through October), when the days are typically clear, sunny, and have a low chance of rain, allowing you to better appreciate the mountain's vibrant colors. During the rainy season (December through March), the summit may occasionally be covered in snow.
Are there restrooms and cell phone/internet service along the route?
Restrooms are basic and only available at key points: at the restaurant where breakfast/lunch is served and at the parking area near the trailhead (bringing your own toilet paper is recommended). As for internet and cellular reception, service is virtually non-existent once you leave the main highway toward the mountain, so you will be disconnected for most of the trip.
