Frequently Asked Questions

How difficult is the hike to Humantay Lake?

The hike is moderately to highly challenging. Although the distance is short (approximately 1.9 miles uphill), the steep terrain and high altitude (13,779 ft / 4,200 m.a.s.l.) demand significant physical effort. Pacing yourself at a steady speed is recommended.

Is it mandatory to rent a horse for the climb?

No, it is completely optional. If you feel tired or suffer from altitude sickness along the way, you can rent a horse directly from the local villagers at the trailhead for S/ 90.00 one way. Please note that for safety reasons, horses only cover the uphill section and cannot navigate the rockiest areas near the lake.

How many days in advance should I acclimate in Cusco?

It is recommended to stay in Cusco for at least 1 or 2 days before taking the tour. This gives your body time to adapt to the high altitude (11,150 ft / 3,400 m.a.s.l.) and significantly reduces the chances of experiencing altitude sickness (soroche) during the hike.

Can you swim or enter the waters of Humantay Lake?

No, entering or swimming in the lake is strictly prohibited. It is a natural glacial water source used by local communities for consumption, as well as a sacred site protected for ecosystem conservation.

What is the best time of year to visit Humantay Lake?

The best time to visit is during the dry season, between May and October, when rainfall is less likely, skies are typically clear, and the lake's vibrant turquoise color can be appreciated at its best.
